First Gen Day for PreCollege

This year, we hosted a dynamic carnival-themed event that blended celebration with academic enrichment, creating a meaningful and memorable experience for our students. The goal was simple: to affirm identity, build community, and provide tangible tools for academic success all in an environment filled with joy.

The carnival theme was intentionally chosen. For many first-generation students, the college journey can feel overwhelming and unfamiliar. Navigating financial aid, academic requirements, campus resources, and long-term planning often happens without a built-in support system of family members who have experienced college before. We wanted to reframe that narrative. The carnival symbolized movement, courage, and excitement because being first-generation is not just about overcoming obstacles; it is about celebrating milestones along the way.

The event space was transformed with colorful decor, music, and interactive stations designed to resemble carnival booths. However, each “game” and activity was strategically aligned with academic enrichment. Students participated in financial literacy challenges that helped them better understand budgeting and loan repayment. A “Spin the Wheel” activity prompted discussions around time management strategies and study skills. Another booth focused on career readiness, where students practiced elevator pitches and explored internship pathways. These interactive elements allowed students to engage with essential academic content in a fun and approachable way.

One of the most impactful components of the celebration was our affirmation station, where students rang a ceremonial bell and shared what being first-generation means to them. Many reflected on honoring their families’ sacrifices, breaking generational barriers, and building a new legacy. The atmosphere was filled with pride and encouragement as students cheered one another on. Faculty and staff who also identify as first-generation graduates were present, offering mentorship, encouragement, and visibility. Seeing successful professionals who once walked a similar path reinforced a powerful message: success is possible.

We also hosted a “Resource Midway,” featuring campus partners who provided information on tutoring services, academic advising, mental health resources, leadership programs, and scholarship opportunities. By embedding these resources into a celebratory environment, we ensured students walked away not only inspired but also informed. The integration of support services reinforced our institutional commitment to access, retention, and student success.

Food, giveaways, and raffle prizes added excitement, but the true impact of the event was the sense of belonging it cultivated. Many students shared that this was the first time they felt their first-generation identity was publicly recognized and celebrated. The event shifted the narrative from challenge to triumph.

Our First-Generation College Celebration was more than a themed event. It was a strategic, student-centered initiative rooted in affirmation and empowerment. It demonstrated that being first-generation is a strength that deserves recognition. Through celebration, enrichment, and connection, we reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring our first-generation students do not just attend college, they thrive, graduate, and lead with confidence.
