Tennessee State University (TSU) demonstrates its commitment to the success of first-generation students in many and various ways. Reflecting on the 2024 First-Generation Celebration Week, it is impossible not to pause and marvel at the milestone achieved by the Zeta Omicron Chapter of Tri-Alpha on October 24th, which included fifty-seven inductees! Just take a moment to reflect on that number… 57. In numerology, five symbolizes grace, while seven represents completion. Together, they embody a journey of transformation and renewal. The 57 inductees are not just participants in a ceremony; they are stepping into a legacy of empowerment and promise. May they walk in grace, embrace new beginnings, and let their induction serve as a beacon for a brighter, more meaningful future.

On November 7, 2024, the Career Mixer showcased the excellence and preparation of our first-generation students. The event, a harmonious blend of professionalism and warmth, left attendees in awe.

Just a few highlights were the soothing sounds of jazz playing in the background creating a relaxed, yet refined atmosphere, and ushers stationed throughout the venue ready to guide and assist guests with genuine hospitality. At the check-in desk, a dedicated team ensured the process ran smoothly. They welcomed attendees with a friendly smile. Guest bios thoughtfully placed on each table, accompanied by bottled water, added a personal touch and encouraged meaningful conversations. Our students, dressed in business casual and/or professional attire, exuded confidence, and readiness. There was no shortage of delicious food, which kept energy high, and spirits uplifted.

After the event concluded, representatives from various industries stayed behind, engaging with students, and answering additional questions, a testament to their commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders. The mixer was a space where connections were made, ambitions were shared, and dreams were nurtured. It was a true celebration of the potential and determination of our first-generation students. The mixer was a space where connections were made, ambitions were shared, and dreams were nurtured. The Art Show was nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to the vision and dedication of Tiffany Mashack, one of our First-Gen Specialists, the lobby of our building was transformed into a gallery, worthy of a professional exhibit. Every piece was curated with thought and care, creating an environment that invited reflection and inspiration. At the entrance, string artwork by Charlie Mtshali (retired first-gen staff) greeted visitors with its powerful presence, setting the tone for the experience. First-gen student and staff volunteers welcomed attendees and distributed brochures, ensuring everyone felt included. Inside, Kiara’s Jimi Hendrix piece captivated the crowd with its intensity…no matter where you stood, it seemed to lock eyes with you, pulling you into its world. Mr. Sheffield’s AI display of Black art was a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation, offering a glimpse into the intersection of technology and culture.

Even the refreshments were memorable! In the back room, a skeletal painting stood guard on a display board, with a table covered with delicious, mouthwatering chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, inviting guests to indulge. Staff members and graduate assistants, with welcoming smiles, encouraged everyone to "please help yourself," creating an atmosphere of hospitality and warmth. The Art Show was not just an event; it was an experience that celebrated the talent, creativity, and heart of our students and staff.

The final day of the week (November 8), the Day of Service, was a fitting culmination of all that First-Generation Celebration Week represents. With an impressive turnout, the event underscored our motto: “Think, Work, serve…. And serve they did indeed!” Our students poured their hearts into writing letters to elementary, middle, and high school students, crafting some of the most inspiring cards I have ever seen. Each card was a masterpiece of encouragement, adorned with messages like, “You got this!”; “Stay in school—it’s cool!”; and “Don’t ever give up!” Others offered heartfelt reassurances such as “I believe in you” and “You can make it!” These words, simple yet profound, reflected the care and dedication of our students to uplift and inspire the next generation.

This act of service was not just about writing letters, it was about spreading hope, sharing wisdom, and embodying the values of empathy and leadership. The Day of Service reminded us that the spirit of giving and supporting others is at the core of what it means to be a first-generation student.

First-Generation Celebration Week was not just a series of events. It was a testament to the resilience, creativity, and passion of our students. From the achievements of Tri-Alpha to the connections forged at the Career Mixer, the creativity celebrated at the Art Show, and the selflessness demonstrated on the Day of Service, this week was a powerful reminder of the incredible potential of our first-generation students. It was a celebration of their past, a recognition of their present, and an inspiration for their future. The Dawn of Greatness: The Journey Begins!
