On November 4, 2025, Coppin State University proudly launched its First-Generation College Celebration with a powerful theme: “First to Dream. First to Soar.” This multi-event series honored the courage, resilience, and brilliance of students who are the first in their families to attend college, while creating spaces for connection, empowerment, and community.
Kickoff Event: A Celebration of Pride
The celebration began with the First-Generation College Celebration Kickoff. First-gen students and allies gathered to meet the First-Gen Eagles team, explore resources, and grab free swag designed to showcase their pride. The highlight? The “Soar with Pride” photo booth, where students struck poses with signs declaring their first-gen status or support for friends blazing new trails. This kickoff set the tone for a week of affirmation and belonging.
Game Day: Building Community Through Play
On November 5, 2025, the Talon Lobby transformed into a lively hub for First Gen Eagles Game Day. Students enjoyed board games, trivia, and mini tournaments, all while bonding over shared experiences. With snacks and prizes fueling the fun, this event reminded participants that celebration can be both joyful and restorative—a chance to laugh, connect, and recharge.
Student & Ally Mixer: Stories and Support
November 6 brought the First-Gen Student & Ally Mixer, an uplifting space where students, faculty, and staff came together to share stories and build networks of support. Dr. Shekima Yarbray delivered an inspiring keynote, reflecting on her own journey as a first-gen student and encouraging others to embrace resilience and community. Light refreshments and engaging icebreakers made this mixer a warm and welcoming experience for all.
Voices of First Gen: Stories That Inspire
On November 19, the celebration continued with Voices of First Gen in Grace Jacobs 321. Hosted by Taya Coleman, M.S., this program invited students into storytelling circles to reflect on their journeys, challenges, and triumphs. Through guided questions, participants explored how far they’ve come—and how their stories can inspire others.
Breaking Barriers: A Virtual Panel
December 1 featured “Breaking Barriers: A First-Gen Panel Experience,” where panelists shared real-world insights and encouragement. Panelists included Mr. Charlie Poole, retired DC Police Officer; Ms. Jeri Jones, Licensed Clinical Social Worker; and Reverend Harry White, Pastor. Their stories underscored the power of perseverance and the importance of leveraging resources and community.
Celebrate First Gen Eagles: A Symbolic Finale
The celebration concluded with students and allies leaving handprint messages of encouragement—a lasting symbol of solidarity and pride. The dream wall was installed in the Eagle Achievement Center (EAC).
