Strength in Connection: WCTC’s Collaborative Approach to First-Gen Success

Students standing on porch of a Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity house build

Success for first-generation students at Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) is built on a foundation of shared experience and intentional visibility. By officially joining the FirstGen Forward Network, WCTC is doubling down on its commitment to bridge the gap between aspiration and graduation. Whether it’s through our staff-to-student mentoring program—where the majority of our mentors are first-gen graduates themselves—or our thriving Tri-Alpha Honor Society, we are weaving a web of support that ensures no student must navigate the "hidden curriculum" of college alone.

Mentorship in Action

Our academic year kicked off in September when we partnered with the student engagement team to create a new initiative under the Student Mentor Program that pairs first-gen mentors with first-gen mentees. Of the 11 staff members serving as mentors in the Student Mentor Program, seven are first-generation graduates themselves. By sharing their experiences, these mentors are helping our students navigate the "hidden curriculum" of higher education while building a supportive community from day one.

A Week of Celebration and Connection

In November, our campus came alive for First Gen Celebration Week. We hosted daily events designed to provide both practical tools and moments of joy:

  • Connection: From "Coffee and Donuts" mixers to a powerful First Gen Panel Discussion.
  • Professional Growth: Students engaged in "Dress for Success" workshops with professional photo opportunities and a Financial Literacy session hosted by UW Credit Union.
  • Recognition: The week concluded with a celebration of our community’s feedback and the awarding of our iPad giveaway.

The momentum continued as we welcomed 40 students and five faculty and staff members into the Eta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha Honor Society. This induction ceremony was a testament to the academic excellence and determination that define our first-gen community.

Leading Through Service

Our students aren't just succeeding in the classroom. They also are leading in the community. In December, students partnered with Habitat for Humanity – Milwaukee, learning about the housing process before rolling up their sleeves for a flooring volunteer day. Others spent their weekend at the Children’s Holiday Party, helping local kids create handprint crafts.

This spirit of leadership was on full display at our February Student Affairs Professional Development Workshop. Four of our students took center stage on a panel to share their experiences with over 60 staff members. The highlight of the day was the opportunity for our students to meet and converse with NASPA President Dr. Amelia Parnell. As a first-gen graduate herself, Dr. Parnell’s presence served as a powerful reminder of where a first-gen journey can lead.
