First-Gen Storytelling Night: Celebrating Resilience, Connection, and Healing

At University of the Pacific, our commitment to first-generation student success is grounded in community, empowerment, and healing through storytelling. Supported by first-generation programs such as SUCCESS TRIO (Student Support Services) and the Community Involvement Program (CIP). Pacific proudly serves a vibrant population of first-generation college students who are transforming their lives, families, and communities through education. As part of the national First-Generation College Celebration Week, Pacific hosted an inspiring First-Gen Storytelling Night, an evening dedicated to honoring the courage, resilience, healing, and collective strength of our first-generation community.

The event brought together students, staff, and faculty for an evening of connection and celebration. The room was filled with anticipation as first-generation students took the stage to share personal narratives that captured the heart of their experiences. For some, it was their first time sharing stories of navigating college systems, balancing academic and family responsibilities, and discovering the pride and challenges that come from being the first to pursue a degree. Each story illuminated the perseverance, courage, and hope that define the First-Gen journey.

For many attendees, the evening was both empowering and deeply moving. Listeners saw themselves reflected in the stories, finding strength and solidarity in shared experiences. One student participant, from the class of 2025, shared,

“Hearing all of the challenges people overcome gives me further confidence that we can overcome any challenge that may still be ahead of us.” A sophomore said the event “Helped me understand that we have similar struggles and that we can persevere.”

These reflections beautifully captured the event’s purpose, to build connection, affirm identity, and celebrate collective resilience.

Throughout the night, storytelling emerged as a powerful form of healing and resistance. For first-generation students, sharing their stories is not just about recounting experiences; it is an act of self-affirmation, healing, and leadership. It honors the sacrifices of families who made higher education possible and underscores the value of persistence and community support. Staff expressed deep admiration for the students’ honesty and strength, emphasizing how these narratives reaffirm Pacific’s commitment to equity, belonging, and student success.

The event also highlighted the essential role of programs like TRIO and CIP in creating spaces for first-generation students to be seen, heard, and celebrated. Through mentorship, financial support, and community engagement, these programs empower students to lead with purpose and authenticity, on campus and beyond.

Participants left feeling inspired, connected, and proud to be part of a strong first-generation community. First-Gen Storytelling Night served as a reminder that being first-generation is not only about breaking barriers but also about building bridges. It’s about leading with heart, honoring our roots, and creating pathways for those who follow.

At University of the Pacific, we continue to celebrate our first-generation students year-round. Their stories remind us that to be first is to be fearless, to persevere with purpose, and to believe that our collective stories have the power to heal within and change the world.
