First Gen Week Celebration

San Antonio student recording a podcast

San Antonio College proudly celebrated First-Generation Student Celebration Week November 3-8, 2026 with a series of vibrant, student-centered events honoring the resilience, achievements, and dreams of our first-generation scholars. As part of the nationally recognized First-Generation College Celebration movement inspired by the signing of the Higher Education Act in 1965, this week provided an opportunity to recognize students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree—and to remind them that they belong here.

The week began with the exciting kickoff of our First Gen Fest, bringing together students, faculty, and staff in a powerful show of support and community. The energy was contagious as students connected with campus resources, shared their stories, and celebrated their accomplishments. First Gen Fest created a welcoming space where students could see firsthand the network of encouragement surrounding them at San Antonio College.

One of the week’s highlights was our special radio show dedicated to amplifying the voices of our first-generation students. The broadcast featured inspiring stories of perseverance, personal growth, and academic success. Students spoke candidly about overcoming challenges, balancing responsibilities, and finding mentors who helped guide their journey. The radio show not only spotlighted student experiences but also reinforced the message that first-generation students are leaders, innovators, and change-makers in our college community.

Throughout the week, Advising Days were held to provide tailored support for first-generation students. Academic advisors and career specialists offered degree planning assistance, transfer guidance, and career exploration resources. These sessions empowered students to make informed decisions about their educational pathways and future professions. By connecting students with clear plans and practical tools, Advising Days reinforced our commitment to student success and long-term achievement.

In addition, we hosted a First Gen Workshop focused on equipping students with strategies for academic excellence, financial literacy, and navigating college systems with confidence. The workshop created a collaborative environment where students could ask questions, build skills, and learn from experienced staff and peers. Sessions like these ensure that first-generation students are not only welcomed but fully supported at every stage of their college journey.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without food, fun, and memorable moments. Throughout the week, students enjoyed delicious refreshments, exclusive first-generation swag, and a lively photo booth where they captured snapshots of pride and accomplishment. The photo booth quickly became a favorite attraction, filled with laughter, signs of encouragement, and celebratory poses that reflected the spirit of the week. These shared experiences helped strengthen bonds among students and created lasting memories of a milestone celebration.

First-Generation Student Celebration Week at San Antonio Colleges was more than a series of events—it was a reaffirmation of our institutional commitment to equity, opportunity, and student empowerment. By highlighting student voices, providing meaningful resources, and fostering community pride, we demonstrated that first-generation students are an essential and valued part of our academic family.

We are incredibly proud of our first-generation students and the determination they show every day. Their courage to blaze new trails inspires us all, and we remain dedicated to walking alongside them as they achieve their educational and career goals.
