Get Your Ducks in a Row with TRIO!

Morehead FGCC Blog

400+ TRIO Talent Search students gathered on November 14, 2025, at Morehead State University for a powerful day of connection, exploration, and celebration of first-generation pride, rural resilience, and bold futures.

Get Your Ducks in a Row with TRIO”, funded in part by a grant from FirstGen Forward and sponsored by TIAA—brought together students from 12 high schools across Eastern Kentucky for an immersive college and career readiness experience designed to inspire and equip the next generation of leaders. The event was intentionally designed to meet students where they are in their journey and provide meaningful opportunities to build confidence and clarity about their futures.

Freshmen and sophomores participated in an engaging breakout session titled “Budgeting 101,” where financial literacy took center stage. Through interactive discussions and real-life scenarios, students explored essential topics such as budgeting, understanding credit and debit, interest rates, and distinguishing between needs and wants. These foundational skills are critical for long-term success, and students were encouraged to begin thinking about how small financial decisions today can shape their futures tomorrow. The session aligned perfectly with the event theme, helping students begin to “get their ducks in a row” when it comes to managing money responsibly.

Meanwhile, juniors and seniors participated in breakout sessions led by the Rural Internship STEM Experiences (R.I.S.E.). Program. Designed to support students from rural communities as they pursue high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand careers, the R.I.S.E. program provided valuable insight into the next steps beyond high school. R.I.S.E. program director Lara Little guided students through key components of career readiness, including securing internships, building strong résumés, and developing essential soft skills such as communication, professionalism, and teamwork. For many students, this session offered a tangible connection between their academic efforts and real-world career opportunities, reinforcing that their goals are both achievable and within reach.

All students also had the opportunity to engage in the College and Career Fair, a cornerstone of the day’s programming. With a wide range of colleges, universities, employers, and community organizations, students explored diverse pathways and connected directly with representatives who could help shape their next steps. Whether discussing academic programs, career training, or workforce opportunities, students gained valuable exposure and asked thoughtful questions about their futures.

Beyond the sessions and networking opportunities, the event served as a celebration of identity and possibility. First-generation students were encouraged to take pride in their journeys and recognize the strength they bring to their communities. The supportive environment fostered by TRIO Talent Search and its partners created a space where students felt seen, valued, and empowered.

Through strong partnerships, this event expanded access, elevated student voices, and strengthened opportunities across our Appalachian region. It is a testament to what can happen when schools, community organizations, and higher education institutions come together with a shared mission: to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has the tools and support needed to succeed.

When opportunity meets preparation, futures take flight.
